Birkenhead Health Action Areas
Wirral is a borough of sharp contrasts having some of the most affluent wards in the country and some that rate as the most disadvantaged, categorised by pockets of high unemployment, low level skills, poorer quality housing, anti-social behaviour and high levels of ill-health. Life expectancy, for both men and women in Wirral, is lower than the average for England and health inequalities within Wirral are increasing.
NHS Wirral’s Strategic Plan 2008 - 2013 cites tackling health inequalities as a top priority. Therefore, it is essential that measures to improve health are strengthened and impact specifically on disadvantaged communities.
A Health Action Area will receive targeted investment in prevention interventions to reduce mortality rate as a result of certain illnesses and diseases. The local community will be involved in the delivery of the Health Action Area programme to ensure that an appropriate approach to providing health and wellbeing initiatives is developed.
The St James Centre is the base of the Bidston, Beechwood and North Birkenhead Health Action Team.
The team offers a number of courses including:
Lifestyle and weight management classes
